Notable for the folding maps at rear, showing the political, geographical, and township characteristics of the territory between Fort Smith and Fort Gibson on the Arkansas River, as well as the supplementary communications appended to Poinsett's introductory letter, which eventuated in the Arkansas legislators acquisition of federal aid for the garrison at Fort Smith. Graff #4433. Dated February 21, 1838 on upper wrapper ("Referred to the Committee on Military Affairs, and ordered to be printed"; upper wrapper). Fairly well-preserved copy, with original string binding at spine edges of both text and plates. Poinsett (1779-1851), South Carolina-born diplomat and statesman; US congressman (1821-25); first US minister to Mexico (1825-30); secretary of war (1837 -41); notable for development of the Mexican flowering plant that bears his name (the poinsettia).
