Quarto, [19] ff, 207 pp. Genealogical tables intercalated. Table of contents, as well as the index of names mentioned, is in preliminary matter. The author, Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz, 1606 - 82, was a mathematical child prodigy and polymath, who wrote on many scientific subjects, incl. astronomy, mathematics, as well as grammar and theology, music and architecture. He corresponded with Kircher, and knew of Kepler's theories. He held important posts under Phillip II, was abbot of monasteries, bishop of several dioceses, and even distinguished himself at the Swedish siege of Prague, where he armed the clergy and helped materially defend the city. (See Catholic Encyclopedia) The subject of this book, first published in 1641, is fully told in the subtitle: "en ella [respuesta] haze evidente demonstracion del derecho del Rey D. Philippe el Prudente, Primero deste nombre en Portugal, y Segundo en Castilla; y prueba manifiestamente, que el Duque de Berganza no tiene ninguno a la Corona." That is, it is a spirited and closely argued defense of King Phillip's right to sit on the throne of Portugal. [Palau note to first edition, 43538: this edition not in Palau] It includes an elaborate genealogy of the monarchs of Portugal and the notable evvents of their reigns. Very faint water staining to the bottom off about 15 pages. The book is uncommon: 1 auction record in 50 years, 2 copies on OCLC of this edition, both in Spain, and scant presence of the 1642 first edition; as noted above, Palau does not seem to have seen a copy of it.Front board has split, but holding firmly. This is a nice copy in a contemporary burgundy morocco, filleted around the edges in gold. N° de réf. du vendeur 6601
