3 vols. (xiv,645 & viii,607 & viii,684p.), 44 pls. & maps, cloth. 1st edition. ex-lib Vol. I, 1817-1863; Vol. II, 1863-1865; Vol. III 1865-1866. Bigelow (1817- 1911) was co-editor and co-owner with William Cullen Bryant of the New York Evening Post (1848-61), U.S. consul general at Paris (1861-65) and U.S. minister to France (1865-66). Bigelow alternated verbatim extracts from contemporary letters, speeches and dispatches with a sensible informed commentary on American wartime diplomacy, Nevins Vol. I, p.246. He was also the author of France and the Confederate Navy, 1862-1868, an international episode, published in 1888. In 1913 Bigelow published two further volumes of his later experiences.
