Titre : Richard Flood and Diana Mattox Family Bible;...
Date d'édition : 1730
Reliure : Three-Quarter Leather
Etat du livre : Poor, Incomplete
Edition : Early Printing
This early 1700's Bible contains family genealogical records for the Flood and Emerson families that have been recorded on blank sides and blank parts of pages. The Bible has been rebound in the 1800's in 3/4 black leather. There are no title pages, and there are pages missing and torn, and the pages have had the edges trimmed in the rebinding. The only printed date is a piece of a preface that has a date of 1715, when King George I ordered the Bibles to be printed. This Bible may have been printed through the 1730's, and I am dating it as 1730, as the earliest inscriptions were most likely made in the 1730's. A number of the inscriptions are partially illegible, so I am placing a question mark at these inscriptions. The earliest inscription is for the birth of Diana (Dinah) Mattox on Nov. 27, 1699. Other sources state that she was the daughter of Henry and Diana Mattox, and that she was married to Richard Flood in Boston on June 25, 1719. The Bible doesn't record her marriage, or the name of her husband. There are the entries for her seven children with their birth dates, with 3 birth dates being partially illegible, being: Diana Flood 1719, Elizabeth Flood 1722, John Flood 1723, Richar 1725, James 1727/28, Henry 1729/30, and Diana 1732. Also recorded are the births of Peirce of Peirce and Elizabeth Paine on March 2(?), 1761. Marriages recorded are: Diana Flood to William Allen on Nov. 30, 1735(?), the marriage of Mary Flood on Jan. 13, 1731, and the marriage of Elizabeth Blanchard to Peirce a Paine(?) on Feb. 18, 1748. Deaths recorded are of Diana Allen on May 22, 1737(?) and what may be a death date for Thomas Paine on July 18, 1746. Additional birth dates that are partially illegible are for William Conan(?) on Jan. 21, 1781 and Abagail (?)issica on Jan. 26, 1781. Another genealogical line starts with the recorded birth of Elizabeth Pike on Sept. 25, 1797. The Bible doesn't give her husband's name or the date of her marriage, but from other sources I find that Eliza W. Pike married Moses Sargeant Emerson in Boston on Jan. 12, 1817. The Bible records their 10 children with their birth dates: Oliver 1818, Elizabeth 1820, Mary Jane 1822, Caroline 1824, Francis P. 1826, Sarah Ann 1828, Lydia 1831, Hiram S. 1835, Olive M. 1838, and Adalaide Ann 1841. The Bible appears to have descended through the youngest child Adalaide, with the entry for the birth of her son Frank Emerson Harran on Nov. 24, 1866, this being the latest dated entry. The Bible's frontpaper is inscribed "Miss Addie A. Harran", and a page's bottom margin has an early inscription of "Elizabeth Blanchard Her Bibel". The Bible is well bound with well attached covers. It is described as Poor due to missing pages. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. N° de réf. du libraire 15430
