Government Notice no. 113. Bookplate of J Ploeger to front pastedown. Signed "C J Juta, High" on the opening page. Coenraad Jacobus Juta occupied several senior Z A R positions in Pretoria, including Minister of Defence and Minister Public Works, Secretary to the Volksraad and Head Sheriff. Born in the Netherlands in 1827, Coenraad was a ship's captain, whose ship foundered on rocks outside Cape Town. He swam ashore, fell in love with a Cape Town girl and never returned to the Netherlands. Coenraad persuaded his elder brother, Jan Carel, to join him in South Africa accompanied by his wife who was a sister of Karl Marx. Jan was the founder of the publishing house of the same name in Cape Town in 1853. Blue boards, rubbed at the spine ends and the lower board. Handwritten title on blue and white label on the upper board. Plain endpapers. 40 pp of rules and 3 appendixes. There is a minor binding crack and the text is foxed throughout, heavily for the front few leaves, then lightly. An interesting pen correction on p 6 changes Her Majesty to His Majesty twice, indicating that the correction was made after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. N° de réf. du libraire 002479
