A propos de cet article

Original Cloth. 12mo. 22 pages. 17 cm. First edition. In French. 'Political Zionism: Precursors and Militants: the Prince de Ligne', written by Baruch Hagani, a French Zionist activist, symbolist, disciple of Max Nordau, author of a biography on Bernard Lazare, and of a biography on Theodor Herzl. This work details the Emancipation of the Jews in the late 18th and early 19th century under the impact of the French Revolution, and details the life and work of Charles Joseph Prince De Ligne (1735-1814) , who was of a princely Belgian family, and an active proponent of Jewish emancipation in Belgium; owing to his efforts, civic emancipation occurred there in 1815; he is also known for the dispute with Voltaire about the Jews, his wartime service as a field marshal, his friendship with Joseph II and Catherine II, and his numerous works (34 volumes) . Hagani wrote a major book on the history of the Emancipation (L'Emancipation des Juifs, 1928) ; a response to the work was given by the Chief Rabbi of France and historian Maurice Liber, who challenged the theses of the work.
