Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7 [8] 9-317 [318: blank] [319-320: ads], inserted frontispiece (portrait of Le Queux), preliminaries printed in orange and black, original red buckram, front and spine panels printed in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. First edition. Fourteen short stories of sensational adventure, mostly criminous. "Short story collection, mostly criminous but with two moderately interesting fantasy tales. 'The Soul of Princess Tchikhatzoff' concerns Russian Nihilists, a beautiful princess in distress, hypnotism and an unusual method of soul transference. 'Fortune's Fool' is an intriguing story of amnesia bordering on personality exchange, and also features theft, murder and a variety of Imperial settings. Two other stories involve exotic poisons, one derived from the gecko lizard and delivered by a prick of a sharpened fingernail; the other derived from the 'Kali Mujah, or Death-Rose of Sumatra,' whose perfume causes paralysis and sometimes even death. A number of the stories feature Russian Nihilists and revolutionaries, to whom Le Queux is clearly sympathetic. Most of the stories are narrated in the first person by an English journalist who could be a stand-in for Le Queux himself." - Robert Eldridge. "'Anybody who likes hypnotism and Nihilism,' says Anthony Hope, 'and secret murder artistically performed by exotic drugs, ladies of great beauty and small scruples, and an astonishing denouement to every story, cannot do better than try Mr. Le Queux's STOLEN SOULS.'" - The Bookman, vol. 2, p. 435. Bleiler (1978), p. 122. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Hubin (1994), p. 498. Spine panel just a bit sunned, page edges foxed, else a fine copy. An uncommon book. (#147650).
