Description :

A splendid piece of rare ephemera by this outstanding portrait artist, left-folded with a single mid-staple and two small punch holes to the fold sheets connected and tied by a piece of orange silk ribbon, now dried and wilted. Measuring 7" by 10-1/4" and printed on mid-heavy stock, the outer covers are light orange-rust, and the internal 16 pages printed on creme stock with printed script in brown ink. With a frontispiece, artwork by Leonebel Jacobs, of Virginia Brown opposite the artist's introductory comments: "A long time ago Louise Young took her child, Virginia Brown, with us on a trip to the Far East. Ever after, this child was the first of seven children belonging to dear friends of mine who became as my own children. For many years Virginia wrote and illustrated and made a book for my Christmas - books full of imagination - humor - understanding and kindness. One was a day in my life ending in a bridge game. Another was of a mouse who came to live with me in my studio in New York. Another of interviewing and painting President Roosevelt, Charlie McCarthy and my grocerman - and altho I have painted three Presidents (all my Presidents were Republicans) President Roosevelt was not one of them. Here is the conversation of my brushes while doing Virginia's portrait. The coat was not ermine altho the real ermine one that I have now has worked as hard. 'The background' was a gift from Gutzon Borglum. The painting was 'accepted' and received a prize. This is my Christmas Card." Condition: mid-staple shows outer rust; there is a single artwork plate, probably of Virginia Brown as a child, laid in and possibly intended originally to appear on the outer front cover; as stated, the silk ribbon is dry and frayed; the covers are very lightly worn and show two very light, small, moisture spots to the upper front edge. Not intended for publication, I suspect that this item was printed in an extremely limited number for friends and family members. N° de réf. du libraire 005262
