Description :

Red-orange cloth with black lettering and flower-design decorations in red, green, and black to front panel. Similar decoration on spine, plus titles in gilt. Previous owner's name and address, plus date, are in pencil on flyleaf: "D. H. Taylor Jr., Jackson, La., Nov. 29, 1902." Frontispiece is an illustration of Hawthorne that appears to be a print of an etching. Jacket is gray-white with floral decorations in blue and black and titles in black. There is a yellowed paper sleeve attached to top right corner that keeps jacket secured to book; it appears to have been homemade, and it appears to have been pasted in place. The jacket has clearly done its work here, for the cover decorations are bright and show no signs of fading. A two-page section that includes frontis has come loose from spine, which is starting a bit in front, but text otherwise is tight. There is some mild foxing to endpapers and edges; top edge is darker, apparently as issued. Jacket has split completely along front spine fold, has several chips/tears to edges and folds, and has a tiny chip to rear panel; rear flap has a crease to top. But jacket is all there, encased in mylar. This was one of the Cambridge Classics series ("The cream of the World's classic literature, in tasteful little volumes such as a book lover delights in. . . . Each, 35 cents."). The other titles in the series are listed on the flaps and the rear panel. There is no copyright date, but this obviously predates the late 1902 date in the owner's inscription. 346 pages. A charming little copy that appears to have been well loved, rare in the dust jacket. Size: 4 x 6". N° de réf. du libraire 001061
