Description :

Photographs by Helga Schmidt-Glassner. Translation by Dr. M.D. Senft-Howie. 40 pages, well illustrated (many in color), pictorial wrappers, very good. From the text: The oldest seat of the Bavarian court north-west of Munich was Menzing or Blutenberg Castle, a small residence built by Duke Sigismund, where he wished to devote the last years of his life to the pursuits of a country gentleman. The ducal home farm at Schleissheim, on the other hand, was intended to serve its pious founder, Duke Wilhelm V, the protagonist of the Counter Reformation, as a refuge, a retreat for contemplation and introspection. Schleissheim Palace, therefore, actually owes its origin to the habit practiced by ruling princes of exchanging the grandeur of their courts for the solitude of a hermit's cell. Following the example of Emperor Charles V's retreat to the monastery of San Jeronimo de Yuste and that of Philipp II to the Escorial, Wilhelm V wished to end his days at the hermit settlement at Schlessheim. The home farm at Schleissheim was a genuine hermitage for princes and was regarded as such in the late 16th century. In the 18th century, however, the rustic simplicity of the hermitage provided a setting for a very different form of social ife at courts. N° de réf. du libraire 16416
