London: C. Cox, 1847. Thick 12mo. Beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, in full crushed oasis. Spine gilt panelled and with raised bands. Inside dentelles. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. (pp. xii, 5-436). 1st edition. F. 4529. NOTE: Early Australian equivalent of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, long believed to be the product of a mysterious Alexander Harris, the work is in fact by Samuel Sidney (1813-83), an English publicist who dealt with emigration, livestock, and railways. The details of colonial life and experience are so full and fit so well with contemporary accounts that the work might serve as social history. Sidney apparently gained some of his information from his brother John, who returned to England in 1844, after six years in Australia. Together they edited the 'Emigrants Journal' 1848-50. Sidney is perhaps better known for his 'The Three Colonies of Australia, 1852.'. N° de réf. du libraire 224616
