A propos de cet article

Hope (1903-2003) born in London and emigrated with his parents to the USA in 1908. After several years on the stage as a dancer and comedian, he made his first film appearance in The Big Broadcast of 1938 singing "Thanks for the Memory", which became his signature tune. In partnership with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour, he appeared in the highly successful 'Road to . 'comedies (1940-1952), and in many others until the early 1970s. During World War 2 and the Korean and Vietnam Wars he spent much time entertaining the troops in the field. For these activities and for his continued contributions to the industry he was given a special Academy Award on five occasions. He was an avid sportsman and a very established golfer. A propos de ce titre

From Library Journal:

The book's description, "Bob Hope's comedy history of the United States," is erroneous and misleading. The only comedy history dealt with is Hope's own (over 60 years in show business). For anyone who has read others of Hope's many books-- Have Tux, Will Travel , I Owe Russia $1200 --there is little in the way of new material. In fact, the earlier books provide more depth. However, for readers under 30 who do not know much (if anything) about the institution that is Bob Hope and for those who would like a refresher course, this book is a delight. Co-written with Shavelson (who wrote, produced, and/or directed some of Hope's movies), this rarely deviates from Hope's rapid-fire delivery. Hope has often been labeled a hawk, a title he disputes here. "I was only a hawk when there was a chance that we could win and get out of Viet Nam quickly." A brief chapter updates his activities through 1989. Enjoy. Pictures not seen. Literary Guild main selection; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/90.

Description de la librairie

Since its opening in 1991 within the premises of a small model factory at Alnwick Station, Barter Books has grown well beyond original expectations. Starting off in what was the ticket and parcel office of the original Station, the bookshop has expanded down the platforms and through the waiting rooms, until it now covers over one-quarter of the whole Station site. This translates into an area exceeding 8000 square feet and containing over 350,000 books on more than three miles of shelving. Now houses the Famous Writers Mural - 40 feet long by 18 feet high. The bookshop also sells secondhand DVDs, videos and music (CDs, LPs, cassettes, sheet music), as well as a small but growing section of artists' prints. And then there are the shop's many extra features! These include an open fire in the winter, coffee and cookies, a model railway running above the book columns, a mini-cybercafe, generous seating and browsing areas, a children's room, and dozens of glass cases containing many of the more interesting antiquarian books. A final note: during the enlargement process the owners took (and are taking!) particular pleasure in restoring, as they can, various features of the Station. This so far includes the original North Eastern Railway cast iron fireplaces, two of the Station clocks, a drinking fountain, and various waiting rooms. Most dramatic of all, however, was the restoration of part of the glass roof. That was when we all stood about watching as the sun came streaming in for the first time in many years to bring the wonderful old Station visually back to life. The very latest addition has been a forty foot mural celebrating the names of those who worked at Alnwick Station in its railway days - over 400 names plus the coats of arms of the three railway companies involved.
