Description :

Edition of 400, in original glassine, very tiny tear of the dust flap’s fold, otherwise very fine. With Andy Warhol’s early 1960’s commercially made drugstore ‘engraved’ bookplate laid in. Ask for scan. Another copy with the bookplate, personally given Warhol by Ruscha, and signed by ‘Ed to Andy’ went at Swann’s, NY, in 2004, for $15,000. Ed Ruscha met Warhol at the Pasadena Duchamp show, along with Dennis Hopper and the L.A. gang. Sitting on a plane to Germany a few years ago ten minutes before landing my two neighbours and I started talking, he had been a teenage heartthrob in LA 20512 (name: still very good looking, runs a bar restaurant in LA) his wife was at 17 Mrs Dennis Hopper, she told of various things including the pictures on the walls-they were off to Berlin Film Festival for her first real Hollywood film’s premiere with Billie Joe whatsit, Hawaii pumpkin or something. Terribly nice. Never met Andy. But survived Hopper, as did this book. My only tangential story is two of us going to Piccadilly Circus for the first night just on the off chance if there was a seat or two left, got on line for ten minutes got seats went in the place was packed the film about to start and in the 15th row there were two seats, a guy sitting in the aisle, next to him two free seats, said are these seats taken, he said no, they’re free, another guy 3 seats down nodded, no problem, the remainder full. Watched the film, got up, whilst leaving noticed the guy on the right of the empty seats we’d gotten was Jack Nicholson, the guy in the aisle seat on the left was Peter Fonda. Nodded, smiled, left. Dennis Hopper or, more likely, "two girls", or "Denis and his chick" never showed. very tiny tear of the dust flap’s fold, otherwise very fine. N° de réf. du libraire

Description du livre Ed Ruscha, Los Angeles, 1970. Soft cover. État : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. 2nd Edition. 1964/1970. Second edition (originally published 1964 in an edition of 400 numbered copies). Soft cover. White matt wrappers with title printed in black on cover and spine, with glassine dust jacket. Photographs, artist's book concept and design by Ed Ruscha. Unpaginated (48 pp.), with 15 yellow-toned plates, and one black and white plate, printed by Anderson, Ritchie & Simons, Los Angeles. 7 x 5-1/16 inches. This second edition was limited to 3000 copies. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004), and in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (light toning to the rear panel and 1/4-inch closed tear at top of rear panel). A bright, tight copy. The second of Ruscha's revolutionary artist's books, Various Small Fires and Milk delivers a sequence of fifteen images depicting lit matches, cigarettes, a gas stove burner, a blowtorch, a highway flare, etc., followed by the book's final, incongruous and delightful plate: a single glass of milk. Challenging the logic of classification systems, while continuing his efforts to redefine the role of photography in conceptual art, this artist's book stands as one of the defining contributions to the medium.
