Description du livre Charles Robinson, Meredith Bridge, New Hampshire, 1843. Leather Bound. État : Very Good. No Jacket. 12 x 8 cms (4.5" x 3"). PUBLISHING DETAILS: Early, 2-volume, leather bound, pocket edition of Captain Marryatt's popular novel, published by Charles Robinson of Meredith Bridge, New Hampshire in 1843. 234 and 227 pages; Size; 12 x 8 cms (4.5" x 3"). Weight; 200g (7 ounces). CONDITION; I would rate these as very good for their age. The full leather covers are well worn at all extremities (see photo) but are otherwise clean and sound. The bindings are tight and secure throughout. The text is clean, bright and free from foxing. There is some light browning to the edges of the endpapers but no labels or inscriptions. All in all, this is an attractive and early pocket edition for the Marryatt collector. THE NOVEL: Snarleyyow, ¿one of the ugliest and most ill-conditioned curs which had ever been produced¿, with ears ¿torn to ribbons by the various encounters with dogs on shore, arising from the acidity of his temper¿, is the loyal companion of the wonderfully-named Cornelius Vanslyperken, lieutenant-commandant of a ship hunting smugglers in the English Channel. The tale takes in Anglo-Dutch relations, Jacobite politics, and the ongoing battle between Snarleyyow and the downtrodden sailor Smallbones. The naval details in ¿Snarleyyow¿ and Marryatt¿s other shipboard tales have the authentic tang of the sea, a testament to the author¿s long and eventful naval career. A trawl around the internet.does throw up a fair few supporters of ¿Snarleyyow¿ as Marryatt¿s great ¿lost¿ novel. (Source: The Royal Society). N° de réf. du libraire 001378
