Détails bibliographiques

Titre : La Sopa de los Conventos o sea Tratado de ...

Éditeur : I. Escalante y Ca., Mexico City

Date d'édition : 1870

Reliure : Hardcover

Edition : Second printing.

Description :

Small octavo, 20 x 13 cm, pp v, [258], 3. First Mexican edition, of the first Spanish edition of 1868. (The final three pages are a poem -- "La Luna; a mi Esposa" -- by the Colombian poet Diego Fallon [1834 - 1905], misprinted here as Pallon. This odd little addendum, which has nothing to do with the text, seems to be unique to this copy, as far as I can determine; none of the other collations on OCLC give any indication of it.) Fuente (1817 - 89) was a significant figure in 19th century Spanish academic and cultural life, author of many books. This one is, as the subtitle indicates, a kind of wry view of poverty, the various kinds or classifications of the poor, and the various ways that it might be addressed. The book is the product of one of the most enlightened Catholic intellectuals of Spain of the 19th century, and his argument shows great breadth of sympathy and learning -- an interesting consideration of the problem of poverty and how to address it. The title -- convent soup -- refers to the practive of convents and monasteries providing soup for the poor, as was customary in Latin Catholic countries. Withdrawn copy from university library, with small ink stamp indicating same and paper label indicating that it was from the collection of Prof. Jose Miranda -- these marks on the front pastedown; on the title-page is a discreet ex-libris stamp fro the library of "Francisco Plancarte / Obispo de Campeche," (1856 - 1920) the first bishop of Campeche. Rare book, both the Madrid and Mexico City printings -- no auction records; 3 copies noted on OCLC, none with this collation. Brown eather spine with gilt title-material and fleurons over somewhat scuffed black boards, paper a little yellowed. Very good copy. N° de réf. du libraire 7202
