FIRST EDITION WITH BOYLE ILLUSTRATIONS 1868, PUBLISHER'S DE LUXE BINDING, small 4to, 260 x 190 mm, 10¼ x 7½ inches, sepia frontispiece,15 very beautiful colour plates printed by George Leighton (as called for), all with thin paper guards, black and white title vignette and tailpieces, pages: vi, (2), 40. In publisher's dark green full morocco, rectangular ivory panel mounted on upper cover, titled gilt within a green, gilt and red oval frame, single rule gilt border to panel and to cover edges, spine lettered gilt with 3 gilt rules at head and tail, all edges gilt, gilt decorated edges to covers and triple ruled gilt dentelles (turn ins), yellow endpapers. Head and tail of spine very slightly worn, spine gilt slightly dull, corners and hinges very slightly rubbed, small bump to top corner of upper cover, ivory panel slightly marked and faintly discoloured, 1 or 2 light scratches to covers, neat inscription on front endpaper dated 1868, tiny closed tear to front endpaper, a few faint fox spots to frontispiece margins, tiny piece missing from corner of plate list, slight pale foxing to margins of plates, small pale stain to margin of 3 pages, small closed tear to 1 paper guard, guard missing on Plate 2, 1 guard torn and neatly repaired, tiny closed tear to fore-edge of 3 text pages and Plates 3, 7, and 9, 60 mm (2¼") closed tear to inner margin of final plate, neatly repaired on reverse and nowhere near the image, faint brown offsetting to some text pages opposite colour plates.
