Description du livre International Food Policy Research Insitute, United States, 2006. Hardback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Poverty is deep and widespread in Honduras. This is especially the case in the hillside areas-home to one-third of the country s population, the majority of whom earn their living through agriculture. While both policymakers and donors are under strong pressure to provide adequate interventions, they require guidance on what drives sustainable rural productivity growth, how to prioritize expenditures, and how to formulate effective development strategies. In this report, the authors develop an integrated econometric framework, based on the livelihoods concept, and demonstrate how it can be used as a policy targeting tool. Using this framework, the authors provide policymakers and stakeholders with empirical information on the livelihood strategies currently employed in the hillside areas of Honduras, existing opportunities for alleviating poverty, and potential priorities for policy and investments. Description du livre Berghahn Books, United Kingdom, 2014. Hardback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book. With growing evidence of unsustainable use of the world s resources, such as hydrocarbon reserves, and related environmental pollution, as in alarming climate change predictions, sustainable development is arguably the prominent issue of the 21st century. This volume gives a wide ranging introduction focusing on the arid Gulf region, where the challenges of sustainable development are starkly evident. The Gulf relies on non-renewable oil and gas exports to supply the world s insatiable CO2 emitting energy demands, and has built unsustainable conurbations with water supplies dependent on energy hungry desalination plants and deep aquifers pumped beyond natural replenishment rates. Sustainable Development has an interdisciplinary focus, bringing together university faculty and government personnel from the Gulf, Europe, and North America -- including social and natural scientists, environmentalists and economists, architects and planners -- to discuss topics such as sustainable natural resource use and urbanization, industrial and technological development, economy and politics, history and geography. Description du livre MIT Press Ltd, United States, 2007. Hardback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Foreign investment has been widely perceived as a panacea for developing countries--as a way to reduce poverty and kick-start sustainable modern industries. The Enclave Economy calls this prescription into question, showing that Mexico s post-NAFTA experience of foreign direct investment in its information technology sector, particularly in the Guadalajara region, did not result in the expected benefits. Charting the rise and fall of Mexico s Silicon Valley, the authors explore issues that resonate through much of Latin America and the developing world: the social, economic, and environmental effects of market-driven globalization. In the 1990s, Mexico was a poster child for globalization, throwing open its borders to trade and foreign investment, embracing NAFTA, and ending the government s role in strengthening domestic industry. But The Enclave Economy shows that although Mexico was initially successful in attracting multinational corporations, foreign investments waned in the absence of active government support and as China became increasingly competitive. Moreover, the authors find that foreign investment created an enclave economy the benefits of which were confined to an international sector not connected to the wider Mexican economy. In fact, foreign investment put many local IT firms out of business and transferred only limited amounts of environmentally sound technology. The authors suggest policies and strategies that will enable Mexico and other developing countries to foster foreign investment for sustainable development in the future. Kevin P. Gallagher is Assistant Professor of International Relations at Boston University and Senior Researcher at the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University. He is the author of Free Trade and the Environment: Mexico, NAFTA, and Beyond and other books. Lyuba Zarsky is a Consultant and Senior Research Fellow at the Global Development and Environment Institute. She is a contributing editor of Investment for Sustainable Development: Balancing Rights and Rewards. N° de réf. du libraire BZV9780262072854

Description du livre Rawat, India, 2002. Hardback. État : New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Sustainable development emphasizes on change in order to improve ecological, economic and social conditions of all people, all the times, and at all places. The brundtland report perceived â??development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needsâ?. Sustainable development recognizes the value of the natural system that supports life on earth. An increasing number of environmental researches are being conducted on the human causes and impacts of environmental change as well as recognizing that local and regional scales are critical for human dimensions of sustainable development. Such an approach will promote capacity-building, particularly in terms of human resources and networks and policy support activities. The human driving forces of environmental change and their implication to sustainable development are gaining currency these days. Most of the social science disciplines place a strong emphasis on the integrated involvement of human dimension research. Environmental protection, as a component of sustainable development, consistent with poverty eradication, is imperative in resource management. So, the human dimension has to be incorporated into planning with an emphasis on sustainable development. The present volume makes an extraordinary effort to highlight above issues incorporating culture, scientific approaches, socio-economic traditions, life-styles and productive systems. The book is an outstanding contribution to development studies. N° de réf. du libraire AMO9788170337072
