SUBJECTS : Western (i.e. North American) Icelanders; Vestur-Íslendingar. CONTENTS: Wilhelm Kristjanson (private notes) states, "Sólöld (The Age of the Sun), the first American [read: North American] children's magazine, radiated warmth, joy, happiness, love and idealsim in its stories and its singing [poetic] lyrics'. The editor wrote many of the contributions himself. AUTHOR BIO : The author, Sigurdur Julius Johannesson (not to be confused with Sigurdur J. Johannesson - the latter also known s "S. J.") was "one of the most prominant and popular of the Icelandic Canadian poets. From the time of his arrival in Canada in 1899, he played a . . . prominent part in community life as a physician, journalist, poet [and translator], temperance worker and a zealous advocate of social and political reform", according to the scholar Kristjanson (The Icelandic People in Manitoba, p. 489).
