Includes James Kirk Paulding's "Selim, the Benefactor of Mankind," an Oriental tale, William Cullen Bryant's "The Skeleton's Cave," a Gothic terror tale, and "Medfield," a ghost story, probably written by Bryant, which was an early precursor of de Maupassant's "The Horla" and Bierce's "The Dammed Thing," which, according to Pattee (The Development of American Short Story, p. 44), "had [the story's theme] been better handled, would have made it one of the select few tales in American literature." Quinn, American Fiction, p. 48. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 2-13. BAL 1605 (noted printing 1). Wright (I) 440. Scattered foxing to endpapers, flyleaves and text block, else a fine copy.
