Description :

Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5 [6-8] 9-244 [245-256: ads], original gray cloth, spine panel stamped in green. First edition. Part of the "Creeps" series. England in the 1930s, lacking the pulp magazines of America, tended to publish its popular fiction in book form, in the big anthologies given away as subscription premiums by London newspapers, and, most importantly for weird fiction enthusiasts, in the well-received "Not At Night" series edited by C. C. Thompson and the "Creeps" series edited (anonymously) by Charles Birkin. Philip Allan's thirteen "Creeps" anthologies were augmented by about ten single-author collections, of which this is the crown jewel, collecting ten notably weird and imaginative tales. ". an exceptionally fine collection of horror stories." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 264. Regrettably, this was the author's only book. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-130. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1015. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 330. Bleiler (1978), p. 123. Reginald 09028. Small triangular area of cloth at crown of spine panel just a bit darkened due to a corresponding chip in the jacket; otherwise, this is a fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket (first state priced "2/6" on the spine panel; the later state jacket was priced 1/-). The spine of the jacket is somewhat darkened, and chipped as mentioned above, but otherwise is fresh and lovely, the colorful front panel just about immaculate. Quite scarce in this condition. Formerly author/editor/publisher Donald A. Wollheim's copy with his name rubber-stamped on rear free endpaper. (#149288). N° de réf. du libraire 149288
