Description :

Octavo, original pictorial green cloth. First edition. Collection of five novellas set in the French Quarter of New Orleans, liberally sprinkled with French patois. "Madrilene, or The Festival of the Dead," builds up a weird atmosphere connected to cemeteries and the festival of the title, and features an old voodoo priestess (genuine supernatural content uncertain). Carefully written middlebrow fiction from the same publisher (and period) that produced work by William Dean Howells and Mary Wilkins. A contemporary review in HARPER'S found in her work "as perfect a representation of Creole conditions and social life as Hawthorne ever made of New England. And the two results were produced exactly in the same way. Neither author used 'local color' as a varnish." The present volume, it said, "will emphasize the fact that the South here has a born interpreter." - Harper's, June, 1892, p. 156. "The best pictures of French New Orleans are in the novels and stories of George Washington Cable, Kate Chopin, Lafcadio Hearn, and Grace King." - Spiller, et al. (eds), Literary History of the United States, p. 687. ". TALES OF A TIME AND PLACE displayed a distinguished style, a prose deliberate and cool, illuminated with splashes of color, and filled at the end with climactic passages of action." - ibid., p. 858. Wright (III) 3130. Cloth lightly rubbed at edges, some dust soiling and staining to cloth, a tight, very good copy with clean interior. (#112549). N° de réf. du libraire 112549
