First edition. One of two short story collections from this author, who was a Rochester, NY lawyer. Consists of the two longish stories named in the book's title. The first is a tale of crime with a high society/ecclesiastical setting in Italy; the second is set in the North African desert. "High time it is someone wrote something about Arthur Cosslet Smith," begins one of the essays in Vincent Starrett's BURIED CAESARS (1923), in which Smith is compared to Stevenson, Cabell, and the French authors of contes. Starrett calls the first story in the present volume "a triumph of light writing, as deft, witty and bubbling a confection as one will care to read ." and points out that "The Desert" gives some more information about the main character from another one of Smith's stories, "The Monk and the Dancer." Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 S-584. Tiny private book label affixed to front paste-down. Spine a bit leaned, lettering on spine faded, tissue guard foxed, else a very good good copy. (#118911).
