A propos de cet article

London: John Warren/G.&W.B.Whittaker. 1821. F First Edition. H 3/4 Leather. Very Good. Attractively bound in 3/4 dark red morocco over matching marbled boards, spine elaborately decorated with tiny interlocking stylized motifs which defy description, covers bordered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt (spine titling at top flaked; some rubbing to edges and joints; front endpaper loose; the plates (in their black and white state) are browned with some offsetting from opposing texts). Published anonymously, the text is in fact by Thomas Gaspey. Cf. Dict. nat. biog.; Halkett & Laing. "Miscellaneous observations on the ludicrous in art" (by Dagley) comprise p. [ix]-xxxix. Contains 26 etched illustrations, a preface and the 6-canto poem. xxxix, [9], 184 p., [26] leaves of plates : 26 ill. ; 25 cm. Thomas Gaspey (1788-1871), English novelist, historian, biographer, and journalist, remembered in part for his salutory improvements in the literary tone of the "Sunday Times" after his purchase of partial ownership. Richard Dagley (died 1841) English subject painter, from 1784 to 1806 he exhibited domestic subjects at the Royal Academy, and later from 1815 to 1833. Noted as a medallist, he also published works on gems in 1804 and 1822. SUPERB PROVENANCE: 1) from the library of and with the engraved armorial bookplate of John Wanamaker (1838-1922) prominent American retailer and public figure, considered by some to be the father of modern advertising; 2) from the library of and with the pictorial bookplate of prominent attorney Chauncey I Clark, noted for his many appearances before the US Supreme Court, author of numerous significant briefs.
