First edition in original grey cloth lettered and decorated in burgundy which has a portrait of Ralph Hull tipped to page 8 which is not present in copies with the orange binding. Original blue cloth with gilt title on spine (bindings in gray and orange cloth have also been noted.) An essential book on the creative work of R.W. Hull, perhaps best known for his work with the rough and smooth principle but who actually had a much wider range than just trick cards. 116 pages. Not issued in printed jacket. FIRST EDITION dated 1946 by the National Library of Scotland, small 4to, approximately 220 x 175 mm, 8½ x 7 inches, large photographic portrait of Hull tipped onto blank page 8, many photographic illustrations in the text, pages: (4), 5-116, (2) - adverts, bound in plain dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine. Very slight rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners, very slightly faded next to spine on lower cover, no inscriptions, occasional very slight faint foxing, a very good clean copy, lacking dustwrapper. Ralph W. Hull (1883 - 1943) was born in Crooksville, Ohio and grew up to be an American magician (specialty card magic) and magic author who invented a number of commercial effects, including the Mirage Deck (1934), and the Mental Photography Deck / Nudist Deck (1934).
