A propos de cet article

This is a series of publications on the history and proceedings of the Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America, headquartered in Winnipeg, by a Pastor who had served that congregation and who carried on a heated dispute with another luminary of the Icelandic Lutheran Church in North America, Rev. Jon Bjarnason. Despite the removal of the author and the place of publication to Denmark, the content of the periodical remained focused on the church he left behind in Winnipeg, reflecting in part the fact the good Reverend had scores to settle with his rival in Canada. PUBLISHER : Winnipeg ; Köbenhavn, 1898-1914. First three volumes published in Winnipeg, Canada, during 1898 and 1899 and thereafter in Kopenhagen, Denmark. Publ. dates/Seq. : 1.-10. [tbl.]. Gen. note Útgáfa I-X var árin 1898-1905. Auk þess útgefinn: Viðbætir 1904 (við 9. tbl.) og 1914 (við 10. tbl.). SUBJECTS : Western [i.e. North American] Icelanders; Vestur-Íslendingar; Icelandic Canadian/American Literature; Íslandssaga; Add.Entry : Hafsteinn Pétursson 1858-1929. Pjetursson served the congregation from June, 1893 for some years. CONTENTS: About the founding and operation of the Church in North America. Vol. II deals with the Lutheran Church history concerning Icelandic immirants in North America from 1875-1894. Vol III discusses the Icelandic festival in Gimli in 1893, the Synod convention held in the U. S., how Icelandic immigrants were adapting to North America; the author's speech to an Icelandic festival in Argyle, Manitoba and conents thereof; account of another speech to an Icelandic festival in Winnipeg; yet another speech the author gave paying tribute to Miss Canada. Vol. V explain the author's dealings with the Icelandic Lutheran Synod headquartered in Winnipeg; the Argyle, Manitoba congregation; the Winnipeg congregation of the First Lutheran Church and the separate Tabernacle congregtion (a splinter group thereof); Vol VI is still on the subjecct of the North American church, dealing with the Synod's attitudes toward immigration from Iceland and the dispute concerning the annual Icelandic festival in Manitoba; Vol VII discusses the demise of the Tabernacle congregation in Winnipeg; Vol. VIII discusses Icelandic immigration to North America from 1854 to 1900; school issues in Canada as they concerned Icelandic immigrants; church history of Icelandic congregations in N. America, 1854-1894; Vol IX provides a detailed account of the author's rivalry with Rev. Jon Bjarnason and the split in the Lutheran congregation as well as providing an account of the relations between his congregation and the synod. In sum, detailed account of church affairs of early Icelandic immigrants to North America. Hjartar does not list this entire series, which appears to be an error on his part, given the criteria he sets for inclusion of publications relating to "western" Icelanders - i.e., North American content predominated even though the place of publication shifted to Europe.
