Détails bibliographiques

Titre : Los Trinos del Solitario, Fantasia Erotica

Éditeur : La Tribuna, Montevideo

Date d'édition : 1870

Reliure : Hardcover

Signé : Signed by Author(s)

Edition : First edition.

Description :

Small quarto (17.8 x 12.7 cm), pp 31, 47, 26, 22, 28, 32, 31(each "trino" or canto has its own pagination). With four mounted albumen photographs, each 21/4 x 31/2 inches (57 x 89 mm). The first photo is a portrait of the author, signed in ink on the image; the second shows a painting of a gaucho on horseback, signed in the painting, and executed by the author, who also painted genre scenes of gauchos; the third is a photograph of a calligraphic text lauding his work; while the final photograph also reproduces a calligraphic text, this time lauding the author. Presumably, this is the first edition, as the author states in his prologue that these are the same poems, with some changes, that had been circulating in manuscript form since 1852. The text is a nostalgic, romantic poem in seven separately published cantos. The page following the title page of each canto states that of the 1000 printed, the sale of 1200 is to go for the printing costs and the sale of the other 800 to benefit various charities such as orphans, beggars, disabled, poor families of Paraguay (of which Uruguay was then part), and the penitentiary. This is the only copy that we have been able to locate from the original edition of 1000. The author laments the coming of modern times and the immigration of foreigners and lauds the ethic and romance of the gaucho, the solitary rider seen in this work. Quite scarce item, as there is no record of either the author or his work in Palau or OCLC. As noted above, he appears to have been a genre painter of gaucho scenes. Binding is full crimson calf, panelled, with title in gilt on the cover: spine is gilt, with raised bands, floral patterns between bands, all very elaborate. The binding is slightly warped, has some minor stains, is missing the front free end paper, and is lacking the first title page (there are six others for the later cantos). Nevertheless, very good, attractive copy. N° de réf. du libraire 6276
