Octavo, original olive green cloth. First U.S. edition. The Doubleday, Page edition was printed in the UK from the William Heinemann plates. Eighteen stories of adventure in the South Seas. "It" has a marginal and ambiguous sort of fantasy about it. A swamp is spoken of in anthropomorphic terms by Strickland, a colonial official who is clearly fascinated by it even as he labors unceasingly to drain it and reclaim the land for productive use. When his replacement (Grieve) comes, he delays leaving. Finally, one morning he is nowhere to be found. Grieve follows Strickland's tracks to the edge of the swamp, where they disappear. Listening to the usual mud-sucking sounds of the swamp, Grieve reflects: "'It' was smacking its lips." A bright, near fine copy in very good plus pictorial dust jacket with shallow chipping at spine ends and some dust soiling, mostly to spine panel. (#113655). N° de réf. du libraire 113655
