A propos de cet article

This set is missing Volume 1. The set contains volumes 2 through 12. Volumes 10, 11 and 12 comprise the complete "History of the United States from their First Settlement As English Colonies, in 1607, To The Year 1808". S.S.Smith has continued the work to the Treaty of Ghent. Volumes 10, 11 and 12 are the "Second Edition, Revised and Corrected". The main set has - "To Which Is Annexed A Supplement Containing A Brief view Of History, From The Year 1808 To The Battle of Waterloo". The 11 volumes are bound in matching full, period calf with gilt lettered, red leather title labels and gilt lettered, black leather volume number labels. Volume 8 is missing one label. Volume 3's front cover is detached. Most volumes have shaky and splitting hinges with some chipping to the spine ends. The volumes have approximately 300 to 450 pages each. The pages are clean, still crisp and are tightly bound. The first 6 leaves of Vol. 12 (the third volume of the United States) have a waterstain to the upper left corner. There is occasional foxing. The inner covers have the previous owners' bookplates. The bookplates are those of Thomas W. (Worcester) Hyde of Bath, Maine. He was a general from Maine under Sheridan in the Civil War and a Maine State Senator. He also founded the shipbuilding Bath Iron Works. A few of the volumes have what may be his grandfather's hand-signed bookplates - "Jo. L.(?) Hyde - 1821". The set's leather is dry and there is chipping but it is still a fairly attractive, period leather set with still bright gilt lettering on the spines and black and red leather labels. The books measure 5-1/2 inches by 8-1/2 inches. N° de réf. du libraire 9805
