2 vols, large 8vos pp 530; 496, with 3 folding maps (colored), color plates of pottery and designs, and many b/w illustrations, both drawings and photographs. Lumholtz carried out his important ethnographic and biological expedition to the Tarahumaras, Huicholes, et al. in northwestern Mexico from 1894 -7. Along with private support from the Amer. Museum of Natural History, the government of Porf. Diaz supplied much assistance including a military escort for his safety, but Lumholtz was an experiencedd explorer, and the author of other books on his investigations of the Australian aborigines. The inclusion of serious ethnographical studies was unique at the time and gives his work a greater significance. The paper is coated, consequently the books are heavy. Very nice decorative publisher's binding, of rust cloth, gilt tile material, and cameo image of native woman surrounded by pottery motif. Very slight wear at top and bottom of spine. Very good.
