Translation (dated July, 1902) of Bellamy's work by prominennt Icelandic Canadian poet/editor/translator Sigurður Júlíus Jóhannesson , plus several other selections - namely a 12-page story entitled "Maðurinn og Vélin" [Man and Machine] by R. G. Ingersoll, plus a 3-page fragment of Jóhannesson's own short story, plus the constitution of the Icelandiic Socialist Organization in Winnipeg (in Icelandic). SIGNED BY JOHANNESSON ON P. 35 IN BLUE INK. Condition: Near Fine in yelow printed paper covers. Very Good. PUBLISHER: Winnipeg : Jafnaðarmannafélag Íslendinga [Icelandiic Socialist Organization in Winnipeg], 1902. Descr. 40 p. ; 15 cm. VG+ in stiff paper (card) covers.Series: Jafnaðarmannarit No 1 [i.e., the first of an intended series of socialist publications(?)] - on title page this serial is renderred thus: Jafnaðarmannarit rit No. 1, Júlí, 1902. Note: while Gegnir and Hjartar both catalogue this as a book, it appears to this bookseller that it is a "one off" journal containing the works of four different authors. Subject: Náttúruauðlindir: Vatn [Natural Resource: Water]; Add.Entry: Sigurður Júlíus Jóhannesson 1868-1956. TRANSLATOR BIO: Both Gegnir and Hjartar indicate that the translator was Sigurður Júlíus Jóhannesson 1868-1956. He was known in his circle as "S. J.", and was a prominent Icelandic-Canadian writer, poet and editor, who edited the Icelandic-Canadian newspaper Logberg for a short while but resigned because of his opposition to Canadian participation in World War I. He also edited 5 other Icelandic-Canadian periodicals (see Hjartar, p. 42). Prof. Richard Beck also applaudes him as a fine poet, editor and an unusualy fine translator - see Beck's History of Icelandic Poets, pp. 221 - 224. Referenced in Hjartar, p. 11.
