Description :

Piranesi's magnificent 9 foot column etchings are some of the most sought after works of art in the world. His attention to detail is as overwhelming as it is stunning. Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) melded his love for art with his passion of the ruins and every day scenes of Rome. He was able to excel in the fields of printmaking, archaeology, and entrepreneurship. Because of that, he was able to make a name for himself and soon became one of the most famous print-makers of the time and one of the most influential artists that humanity has seen. He almost single-handedly created and popularized the neoclassical style. Most know Piranesi for his two series: Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome) and Carceri (Prisons). However, his work in Trofeo o sia Magnifica Colonna are considered to be, amongst many in the world of collecting, his greatest accomplishment. This particular column was created to galvanize and honor the victories and memory of the 2nd century Emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius during the Danubian wars. The column itself is believed to have been erected circa 193 A.D. Our example lacks the pedestal. , Image Size : , Platemark Size : 475x2593 (mm), 18.70x102.09 (Inches), Paper Size : 530x2785 (mm), 20.87x109.65 (Inches), Black & White, Copper Engraving Very Good.
