Presentation inscription "The Rev. J. Hutchinson/from Edward Lear/ 107. 2do. Via Felice. Rome./October. 7. 1842". The cloth boards with a few minor shelf-wear blemishes and a slight smudge to the title, but overall a most handsome copy.* 25 lithographed plates. The first of Lear's illustrated travel books. Altogether 209 copies were subscribed, including Queen Victoria, four members of the Royal family and Lord and Lady Stanley (Lear's first patrons). *This copy, which came to us in a very dishevilled state and lacking one plate (now replaced), has been expertly restored to its former glory by England's premier bookbinders Aquarius, the plates cleaned, tissue guards renewed, spine repaired.
