A propos de cet article

Publisher/Imprint : Reykjavík : Bókaverzlun Sigfúsar Eymundssonar, 1910. Description: 198 p. ; 20 cm. Light soil to covers, else Very Good in one half leather and red cloth hardcover. Contents/Efni: short stories, including Ungfrú Harrington og ég: s. 1-82. - Íslenzkur ökumaður: s. 83-129. - Íslenzkt heljarmenni: s. 131-146. - Íslenzkur Shelock Holmes: s. 147-160. - Mabel McIsaac: s. 161-172. - Patrick O’More: s. 173-186. - Bergljót: s. 187-198. The author was one of the greatest prose writers of the Icelandic-Canadian Community, and "one of those few Western Icelandic writers who gained popularity on both sides of the Atlantic" (Neijmann, The Icelandic Voice, , p. 146). He emigrated from Iceland to Nova Scotia at age nine. He became a schoolteacher in western Canada in 1889. After his retirement, he lived at Elfros, Saskatchewan (Kirkconnell, Canadian overtones). His social criticisms were based clearly on the immigrant experience, according to Neijmann. She states also that, "the more important aspect of [the author's] fictional tales . . . is that he creates a folklore, a body of legends for the West Icelanders . . .". In his books, the heroes are usually courageous young Icelanders proving their moral mettle in various parts of the western world. The stories include mystery and detective stories (e.g., re an Iclelandic Sherlock Holmes). Referenced in Hjartar, p. 61. One listing only on Amicus; not in Peel (3rd Ed.). Rare.
