Hardback octavo, quarter-bound, hand-bound maroon Scottish calf with gilt bands & title on spine & marbled paper boards, very good plus condition, black & white drawings (commentary section & frontispiece). 181 pp. (Originally published in 1795, this facsimile is a limited edition of 675 copies. The text is 149 pages, plus a preliminary unnumbered 32-page commentary by Gavin Fry, Australian National Maritime Museum. Dedicated to Caroline, Princess of Wales.) This is the first account by a woman of the hazardous voyage from England to the penal colony at Sydney Cove (in 1791) and her return to England. Her husband was the captain of the ship Gorgon. On the outwards leg they carried convicts, plus Major Grose, Captain Watkin Tench and others of the New South Wales Corps. On the return leg, they carried many plant and animal specimens (Sir Joseph Banks was a subscriber), the convict escaper Mary Bryant, and the Bounty mutineers. N° de réf. du libraire 12621

Edition limited to 750 copies. Printed on Ivory Kilmory Text and finished in 1991. This edition is limited to just 750 copies.of which 675 copies were bound in half maroon Scottish calf. Just three years after the first fleet the author leaving two young children at home accompanied her husband and kept an excellent diary of the events including the condition of convicts on transport ships. Also listing many of the others on board, sometimes their professions and where they were originally from; including Captains Bristow, Hopwood, Hamilton, Murray, Miller, Colonel Otho Hamilton, Hugh Robert Hughes, Miss Catherine Hunter and Mr. Peyton Hadley. The author was extremely interested in everything happening on board and around the ship even a lightning strike is noted. Dedication is by Lady Diana Princess of Wales. Weighs approx.445g.
