A propos de cet article

Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-vii [viii] 1-143 [144], original gray cloth with printed paper onlay on front cover and printed label on spine. First edition, U.S. issue. "Eight short stories by this little-known British author who eventually became a cloistered Anglican nun. Working behind a masculine pseudonym, she produced a dozen or so books in the years leading up through the First World War, novels, short stories and poems, most of them informed by a 'sense of the invisible' (to quote this publisher's preface) that is reminiscent of the Celtic Twilight, though it is sharper-edged than, say, the work of Fiona MacLeod (a man writing behind a feminine pseudonym). Wood's mysticism is not easy to align precisely with any body of dogma: it shows broad streaks of Catholicism and Theosophy (she wrote frequently for THE THEOSOPHICAL REVIEW), as well as glints of paganism. The stories in the present collection are a little softer in tone than those in her 1904 collection THE SAINT AND THE OUTLAW, but most are well worth reading. Vincent Starrett devotes a chapter to her in his BURIED CAESARS, recalling how he came across the present title by chance, then quickly acquired and read nine of her other books. He praises her for her ability to convey the 'incommunicable.'" - Robert Eldridge. Attractive bookplate of Alice Helen Pierrepont affixed to the front paste-down and her pencil signature on the verso of the front free endpaper. Spine panel repaired, spine label missing, else a very good copy. (#151681). N° de réf. du libraire 151681
