Half title page and frontispiece engraving loose. Poor. Author does not spare the graphic, bloody imagery in his stories about female heroism and sacrifice during the Civil War. Very slightly foxed. All edges gold gilt. Large 8vo. Original full green embossed cloth binding, decorated and lettered in gold. Slight smudge on spine. Book or library label remove from the inside of the rear board. Ink manuscript ownership of: "Stone and Huse, Lowell, Massachusetts, November 21st, 1866." Hardbound. Very good. Includes: Mrs. Fanny Ricketts; Mrs. Mary A. Brady; Margaret E. Breckinridge; Mrs. Mary W. Lee; Mary E. Shelton; Miss Amy M. Bradley; Kady Brownell; Mrs. Belle Reynolds; et. al. The stories of over 40 women from the North who followed the men to the battlefields as aides, nurses, actual fighters, etc., some of whom spent time in Confederate prisons. The most impressive illustration is the engraving of Kady Brownell (the heroine of Newbern) in her Army costume - with sword. Covers show some open corner/spine end wear. Waterstaining appears on parts of covers and in entire text as does foxing. Text is still tight and quite clean despite staining. Many steel etchings of women still have original onion skin protective paper. Gives stories and biographies of many women who endangered their own lives to help wounded soldiers.
