Description du livre London: Sotheby ; Victoria and Albert Museum, 1982. État : Gut. 1. publ.. 486 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Since 1929, when the Museum first published an unillustrated catalogue of its wallpapers, the collection has increased six-fold-an expansion which has necessitated the preparation of a completely revised and reset new edition, including descriptions of over 2,000 wallpapers and designs and including 827 monochrome and 75 colour illustrations. The catalogue is divided into three parts. The first, 'Anonymous Wallpapers and Wallpaper Designs', covers the period from 1509 until 1978 and includes a number of early decorative papers used alternatively as wallpapers. The substantial section on English papers is followed by sections on other European countries, the United States, Japan, and on Chinese papers imported into Britain. The second section, 'Pattern Books', covers the Museum's unique holdings of books of designs used to decorate town and country houses, castles and palaces in Britain from 1824 until the 20th century (as well as early 19th-century order books, bills, price lists and press cuttings); France and Sweden are also well represented. Where the pattern books give titles of individual designs these are named. The third section, 'Designers', is devoted to papers and designs by identifiable artists; they are catalogued under the artists responsible, who are listed alphabetically in what is, in effect, a directory, international in scope and with concise biographies, of wallpaper designers. They range from John Baptist Jackson, the 18th-century master of chiaroscuro printing, to such recent and contemporary figures as Edward Bawden, John Minton and Antony Little, and include well known artists and architects who also designed wallpapers : notably William Morris (whose pattern books are in the collection), Walter Crane, C. F. A. Voysey, Edward W. Godwin, Albert Moore and Frank Lloyd Wright. The catalogue is prefaced by Charles C. Oman's resume of the history of wallpaper from the first edition, still a standard text, which has been revised and is followed by a text by Jean Hamilton which introduces the new material in the present edition.
