The first edition of a book born out of a great collaboration of the witty and the grotesque, illustrated by the aesthetics pioneer Aubrey Beardsley. The first edition of Bon-Mots, a collection of witty remarks and anecdotes, written by English comic writer Sydney Smith, and Anglo-Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Edited by newspaper editor Walter Jerrold. In the publisher's original white cloth, with a frontispiece of Smith, as well as numerous in-text illustrations throughout by the esteemed illustrator and leading figure in the Aesthetics movement Aubrey Beardsley.A work born from great collaborators, Smith was known as one of the greatest humorists of his generation, while Sheridan was also famed for his biting wit. The wit is further complemented by Beardlsey's iconic ink drawings, praised for being grotesque, and inspired by Japanese woodcuts. In the publisher's original white cloth. Externally, slight browning to boards. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. The odd small marks. Decorative end papers are bright and clean. Internally, firmly bound. Previous owner's ink inscription to title leaf. Pages are bright and clean, with a couple of small spots to first and last leaves. Very Good. N° de réf. du vendeur 1005N16
