First edition of this facsimile of Washington's Revolutionary War account book, issued with related state papers and published to support educational institutions established in his honour. As commander-in-chief, Washington declined a salary, charging only expenses, which he recorded with meticulous care. Two further engravings, of Mount Vernon and Washington's tomb, are sometimes found; Sabin notes multiple institutional copies with them absent, as here, clearly representing a separate issue. Sabin 101724. Folio. Engraved frontispiece, engraving of colonial money, lithographic illustrations throughout. Original green floral-patterned cloth, covers lettered in gilt within cartouche. Gift inscription, "To D. Le Merchant Esq from J. W. Cowell Feb 4. 1841", to front pastedown; prospectus for book tipped-in at front. Slight wear at extremities and minor spotting. A very good copy.
