Handsome prize binding by Riviere in full polished calf gilt; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers; half-title. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure, the hinges and joints intact. Some fading to covers, the extremities a little rubbed in places. Interior fresh and clean. Contemporary prize inscription to front endpaper. A most handsome copy.

Notes: A wonderful first edition copy of A New Glossary of the Dialect of the Huddersfield District, which was written by Walter Edward Haigh (1856-1931), who had been the Head of the English & History Department at Huddersfield Technical College, published by Oxford University Press in 1928. The book is noteworthy for containing a foreword by Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, who would go on to write The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
