The work was born of an assignment the author and the photographer received in 1936, to produce an article for the Fortune magazine on the conditions of life of sharecropper families in the American South during the "Dust Bowl." Agee and Evans set off for their assignment to return with the striking pictures some of which are seen in the present volume, as well as Agee's notes. Although not widely sold at first, the book became a highly influential work that notably inspired Aaron Copland to write his opera The Tender Land and is now studied in the US as a source of both journalistic and literary innovation. Agee's argumentation and his comments on the conditions of life of these farmers, although of little use to the farmers themselves, meant a great deal for the larger public who discovered through his work the poverty and want of these farmers. James Rufus Agee (1909-1955) was an American novelist, journalist, poet, and screenwriter. He was also one of the most influential film critics in the U.S. Walker Evans (1903-1975) was an American photographer and photojournalist best known for his work for the Farm Security Administration. Many of his works are now part of collections in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art or George Eastman Museum.
