596; 539pp. Octavo [22 cm] Brown leather with part of the leather gilt stamped spine labels remaining. Good. The extremities are heavily rubbed and scratched. There are numerous small stains on the covers, and there are several large dark stains on the spines. The front boards have a contemporary owner's name in pen. The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges. There are 4 tears in the leather at the ends of the spines. The longest tear is just under 1 inch long. The front pastedowns have a previous owner's bookplates, and the front free endsheets are almost completely detached. The pages are browned and lightly foxed. The edges of the endsheets and pages at the beginning and end are darkened. The corners of the pages are very sporadically creased, and a handful of pages have markings in pencil. A dozen or so pages have chipped edges. The books are sturdy. There are several cracks in the boards of volume 1 along the joints. The longest crack measures 2 inches long. The endsheets of volume 1 have numerous tiny dark dot-like stains. There are multiple small closed and open tears in the rear endsheet along the hinge. There is a small loss from the bottom edge of the front free endsheet of volume 2 that measures 2 inches wide by 1 inch deep. There is a 3 inch long closed tear in the rear free endsheet of this volume as well. The pages of volume 2 have large, but light damp stains here and there. This American trial had many famous key players: The defendant, Aaron Burr, founding father, third Vice President (killer of Alexander Hamilton in their famous duel three years earlier); The trial judge, John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court; The force behind the prosecution, Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and President of the United States; Defense attorneys, Edmund Randolph and Luther Martin, both delegates to the Constitutional Convention and among the most famous men of the day.
