Creasing and slight folding creasing and small closed tear to top edge of rear panel of dustwrapper adjoining head of spine of dustwrapper. Small light unobtrusive creases to middle of lower third of front panel of dustwrapper, possibly from production. Front panel of dustwrapper nice and bright. ***220 mm x 144 mm. 118 pages. ***Letter Correspondence from 1906 to 1931 which bring the Bloomsbury Group to life: the second and third letters: the letter by Virginia describing her stay in St Ives Cornwall trying to write a letter to Lytton Strachey on the corner of a dining table which she is using as her makeshift living-room, separated only by folding doors from a persistently crying baby, and writing about the green and purple tints of the sea and the golden gorse, and Lytton's reply writing about his persistent cold, confined to one room, the dreadful drizzly fog and meeting, amongst others, a young undergraduate called Rupert Brooke with pink cheeks and vivid yellow hair --- etc., etc. ***'Virginia Woolf and Lytton Strachey were, both in their writings and their characters, two remarkable persons; they were also remarkable letter writers. The Stephen and Strachey families were closely connected and, in the 19th century, belonged to that influential British caste, 'the aristocracy of intellect'. Virginia, Stephen and Lytton Strachey had met, therefore, before Lytton went to Cambridge in 1899, but it was only after he had come down from the University and they were both living in London that they became intimate friends and members of that close circle to which people later gave the name 'Bloomsbury group'. They corresponded with each other spasmodically until Lytton Strachey died in 1932. This volume contains practically all the letters which they wrote to each other. As letters they are worthy of these two considerable writers, who reveal in them so much of their characters and their gifts and also the great affection which persisted between them for nearly thirty years, indeed until the last letter in this volume which Virginia Woolf wrote to Lytton Strachey, but which death prevented him from reading.' (Quote from front flap of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the true first edition, extremely hard to find in the complete and original fragile Vanessa Bell illustrated dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of the artwork of Vanessa Bell, the publications of The Hogarth Press and Bloomsbury Group first edition titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de réf. du libraire 4671
