A propos de cet article

Description :

First impression of the first UK edition. The book was first published by Little, Brown and Company in the USA in 1943. ***Near fine in green, cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still unusually bright. Extremities hardly rubbed. Corners sharp. No foxing. No inscriptions, but there is an attractive bookplate to the front pastedown, which is covered by the front flap of the dustwrapper. Pages clean and bright. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, priced at 8/6 net on the spine. Edges of dustwrapper slightly rubbed, creased and browned. Tiny loss and rubbing to the head and tail of the spine of the dustwrapper. Spine hardly browned. Front and rear panels slightly discoloured (being a matt yellow background). ***190 mm x 130 mm. 212 printed pages. ***A novel sympathetic to the Soviet Union, who were our allies in the Second World War, centering around the builders and destroyers of the Dnieper Dam in the Ukraine. ***'Anna Louise Strong (Nov 24 1885 - Mar 29 1970) was a 20th-century American journalist and activist, best known for her reporting on and support for communist movements in the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. She wrote over 30 books and varied articles.' [Wiki] ***'In the lower reaches of the Dnieper River, there was an almost 100 kilometres long stretch that was filled with the Dnieper Rapids. During the 19th century, engineers worked on projects to make the river navigable. The Dneprostroi Dam was built on deserted land in the countryside to stimulate Soviet industrialization. Construction began in 1927, and the plant started to produce electricity in October 1932. The station became the largest Soviet power plant at the time and the third-largest in the world. During World War Two, the strategically important dam and plant was dynamited by retreating Red Army troops in 1941, after Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union. The tidal surge killed between 20,000 and 100,000 unsuspecting civilians, as well as Red Army officers who were crossing over the river. It was partially dynamited again by retreating German troops in 1943. In the end, the dam suffered extensive damage, and the powerhouse hall was nearly destroyed. Both were rebuilt between 1944 and 1949. [Wiki] ***Uncommon to find in the original 1940s dustwrapper - Gollancz dustwrappers in particular are prone to wear and damage, especially from the 1930s and 1940s. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
