Description :

FIRST EDITION, first issue. Folio, fldg. engr. frontis. plan of the city by Edgar, (some dust-soiling and minor fraying in blank margins and with early repairs to the back), 20 other engr. plates, 19th C. full calf, spine gilt, some ocassional foxing and browning to lower margins binding bit rubbed and chafed and with crack at foot of front joint repaired, new title label. With a couple of pages from the Edinburgh Chronicle for October 1759 stuck to front e.p. and with a note about the cancelled leaves on the verso. [The scarce first issue, with leaves 2H2 and 2X2 in uncancelled state, followed in this copy by the corrected leaves with amended text. 762 copies of the book were published, but on publication the Coutts family initiated a lawsuit against Maitland as they thought they had been libelled by Maitland's comments concerning the supposed role of Lord Provost Coutts during a shortage of corn in 1740. The lawsuit was successful and the book had to be recalled from circulation so that the offending text could be removed. This resulted in the cancellation of leaf 2H2 to appease the Coutts family and leaf 2X2 was also cancelled due to a slighting reference to Walter Little. Maitland had distributed 213 of the 762 copies, mostly to the Edinburgh booksellers, thus the remaining 549 in stock had to have the offending leaves cancelled, while as many copies of those already distributed had to be recalled for the same purpose. This led to very few copies in circulation with the leaves in uncancelled state. ECSB 717.]. N° de réf. du libraire 14313
