This famous work was read before the National Academy of Sciences in April of 1893 and in revised form at the International Conference on Aerial Navigation in Chicago in August 1893. Inspired by the work of Mouillard and others on the subject of bird flight, particularly the ability of large birds such as the buzzard to soar for hours with little or no effort.
