Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece to Vol. I and facsimile of Queen Christina of Sweden in Vol. Vi. 'Indubitably, his edition of Milton was Todd's opus magnum, a significant feat of scholarship which remained authoritative for fifty years' (DNB). Todd's technique of selecting commentary from earlier editors and complementing them with his own research was the forerunner of modern literary scholarship. Henry John Todd (1763-1845), educated at Oxford and ordained, held a number of livings in the diocese of Canterbury, being a minor canon of the Cathedral, and the post of librarian at Lambeth before moving to Yorkshire. The success of his edition of Milton led to his election as a Fellow of the Society of Arts in 1802. It has not been possible to determine the actual former owner of this set, the Welsh motto, which may be translated as 'Without God destitution, With God abundance,' was used by various Welsh families.
