Although she died in 1952, this first biography was not published until 1977, one of Michael King's earliest work on the Maori people and still one of his most important. It is said the survival of the Maori King Movement was due to her determination and influence, she was instrumental in re-settling Waikato Maori on their land and gaining compensation for territory confiscated during the Land Wars of the mid-1800s. Strong-willed, forthright and steadfast in her fight foir her people, she was also something of an enigma --- all these facets are traversed in King's exceptional biography.
