Quatrième de couverture :
The States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) haveestablished the Organization for the Prohibition of ChemicalWeapons (OPCW) in order to achieve the object and purpose of theConvention. It aims to ensure the implementation of the CWC sprovisions, including those for international verification ofcompliance with it, and to provide a forum for consultation andcooperation among States Parties. The aim of this book is to give acomprehensive view of how to internationally verify compliance withthe CWC, in principle, using analytical chemistry and relatedstrategies and methods.

There are currently eighteen analytical laboratories that haveestablished capability, and obtained recognized competence in, theanalysis of samples for CWC–related chemicals; these laboratoriesare the OPCW designated laboratories. The majority of the chaptersin this book discuss the analytical methods used in these off–sitelaboratories. The methods discussed are for the identification oftarget chemicals from environmental and human origin samples. Theprocedures and strategies for on–site sampling and analysis arealso discussed.

A variety of topics are covered, including:

  • the requirements of the CWC for verification, sampling, mobilelaboratories and their equipment and software;
  • sample preparation from environmental samples;
  • official inter–laboratory proficiency tests arranged by theOPCW;
  • the OPCW Central Analytical Database (OCAD);
  • monitoring of hazardous chemicals;
  • analysis strategies and quality assurance;
  • analytical methods including gas and liquid chromatographyhyphenated with mass spectrometry or other detectors, nuclearmagnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy andcapillary electrophoresis, and the detection of exposure to toxicscheduled chemicals.

This book is aimed at researchers from the fields ofenvironmental and analytical chemistry, and researchers in civiland military laboratories. The National Authorities of the StatesParties to the CWC will find the book useful as it coversdevelopments in the area of CWC chemicals analysis. The approachesare practical and the chapters are particularly useful for thosepeople responsible for developing their laboratory analysis methodsand work instructions.

Présentation de l'éditeur :
Describes the procedures for collection of samples, samplepreparation, and analysis of CWC–related chemicals. It deals withanalytical procedures that can be followed in well–equippedoff–site laboratories (designated laboratories), as well as theon–site analytical procedures that the OPCW inspectors use insample collection and preliminary analysis of the samples in fieldconditions.
  • A one–of–a–kind, highly topical handbook for every expert inthe chemical weapons field
  • Outlines the methods for analysing chemical weapons both on andoff site
  • Authored by international experts in the field from toplaboratories in both government and academic institutions
