The Reverend Richard Taylor was appointed as a missionary in Wanganui in 1843 for the Anglican Church, having previously preached in New South Wales and the Bay of Islands (NZ). He was accompanied by his wife, two sons and a one daughter. Laura. Taylor's Wanganui parish covered a large area and his work frequently took him away his Wanganui base, often accompanied on these by Laura, who kept a diary recording her experiences and observations. Excerpts from these diaries were transcribed and edited by Randal Springer for the book. He had earlier researched the work of her father, who served at Wanganui for more than 30 years and became, as Springer notes "., the dominant pakeha in the district until his death." Of Laura's writings Springer comments that they "emphasise the importance of the commonplace. So often our history is written in the staccato phrasing of facts by the historian." In contrast the Laura diaries provided an "unpretentious simple recording of everyday events.in the context of people who actually experienced them." The first excerpts are from early 1847 and continue for about 10 years, revealing details and facets of lives of Maori and Pakeha in an informal style not found in the more structured writings of the time. As well as recording every-day details of life in, and related to the mission, and on her travels with her father. she gives an alternative view of NZ in its earliest days of European settlement, thereby providing a valuable addition to the literature of that era. Her dairies also record the family's trip to Australia and to England, and the voyages each way, adding an interesting account of sea travel in the days of sail. First edition of 1993 by the Whanganui Historical Society, 284 pages including two appendices, notes and index, illustrated with b/w photo frontis of Laura Taylor plus nine photos, sketches by the diarist and her father, also one map.
